Orvieto Day Ten

Today we took a day trip to Orvieto. We began with a quick tour of the historical center led by Catia before having some free time to explore the city. During our free time, we explored the city a bit in hopes of finding some good clothing stores or souvenirs. I didn’t find anything I wanted to buy so we decided to get coffee instead. I had one of my favorite cappuccinos on the trip before we headed to where we were going to have a group lunch.

Once we arrived at the restaurant Il Labirinto di Adriano, we were told to leave our belongings in the restaurant because there was a surprise for us. To our surprise, we were getting a tour of the labyrinth museum that is owned by the family. I had never visited anything like that so this was a new experience for me. I believe that they said it was 60 ft underground which is insane. The museum held a wine cellar, mummified tree roots, sculptures, and other artifacts. It was insane to see all the history down there. I love learning about things like this and I could have never guessed this was all down there. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.

After that, we went back to the restaurant and had our group lunch, which was three courses. We started with a boars head gnocchi for the first course and then for the second, we had some kind of meat with cabbage on the side. For dessert, we had a flan-like chocolate cake which I thought was pretty good.

After our group lunch, we went to have a tour of the Duomo di Orvieto. This was one of my favorite Cathedrals we visited solely because of the artwork. Catia explained to us the artwork and I couldn’t believe the amount of detail that was put into everything. The symbolism of the antichrist, apocalypse, and resurrection of mankind was crazy to see in the artwork. I am so glad Catia explained the storyline of the art because I would have been a little lost without clarification. Although I am not religious this was still incredible to see.

After we toured the duomo, we headed back to the villa for our fourth and final cooking class. We learned how to make risotto and veal again. I enjoyed learning how to make risotto because it is one of my favorite Italian delicious. We made it with asparagus and it was one of my favorite meals at the villa. Feeling super grateful for all the experiences so far.

  1. Ciao Isa,
The Duomo was absolutely breathtaking, and that first picture that you took really encapsulates that. You mentioned Catia and how you were happy that she was there to explain, I 100% feel that. She is such a knowledgeable person, I can't even fathom where she holds all of her information. She is like a well, a deep deep well. I wish she could explain some of my classwork to me...

Miss you, hope your summer goes well!
